Our History
Historical Evolution of Central Tax Formations in Kerala
Following the financial integration of Part B States from 1st April 1950, Travancore and Kochi were brought under the jurisdiction of the Collector of Central Excise, Madras. The Malabar region was already under this control as part of the Mangalore formation.
A separate Collectorate was created in Kochi on 1st May 1960. In May 1983, the Custom House and the Collectorate of Central Excise were separated under independent Collectors.
On 16th July 1997, the jurisdiction was bifurcated to create a new Commissionerate for the northern districts. In 2002, as part of cadre restructuring, a third Commissionerate was established at Thiruvananthapuram.
The most significant transformation came with the introduction of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) from 1st July 2017. The erstwhile Central Excise Commissionerate, Kochi was reorganized and renamed as the Central Tax & Central Excise Commissionerate, Kochi on 22nd June 2017, to align with the new GST regime.
